Police have urged truck drivers to respect road traffic rules and regulations to prevent fatal accidents that arise out of recklessness and inappropriate driving behavior.
While addressing about 60 drivers of Skol breweries, Senior Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the spokesperson for traffic and road safety department, observed that accidents caused or involving heavy trucks are in most cases fatal.
He also called upon drivers to drive carefully during foggy or heavy rains.
The meeting was part of the ongoing efforts to sensitize all groups of road users on how safe to drive, ride or walk on the road without causing accidents.
SSP Ndushabandi noted that most accidents are caused by reckless driving, speeding, failure to respect traffic signposts, mechanical faults as well as human behaviours.
“Sudden swerving, failure to leave sufficient safe distance between vehicles, excessive speeding, failure to drive within the designated lanes, and neglect and lack of attention while driving are some of the most common reasons behind accidents involving trucks,” SSP Ndushabandi told the drivers.
He said the awareness lecture is designed to enhance awareness among motorists and encourage them to exercise caution while driving.
Anyisie Murorunkwere, the Human Resources manager for Skol lauded the collaborative framework between the company and police by away of educating their driver’s about road safety.
