Trio arrested over forgery of driver’s license

Police have arrested three men in connection with forging and selling driver’s license.

The trio were arrested from Biryogo suburb in Nyarugenge sector of Nyarugenge District early this week.

They were at the time found with several materials they use in forging permits.

According to the Central Region police spokesperson, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, Police received a tip off that that a certain Assoumani Minani was forging driver’s license.

“Police arrested Minani red-handed as he was selling a forged license at Rwf20, 000,” Supt. Hitayezu said.

“Upon arresting Minani, he led the officers to an internet cafe owned by one Abdoulkarim Muyogoro, where the permits are forged from with the help of Hamza Hategekimana. Both Minani and Hamza were also arrested in the act,” he added.

The trio is currently detained at Nyarugenge Police station as investigations proceed.

“We are still investigating the case to ascertain if there are no other fake licenses out there or other people connected to this ring,” he added.

He further advised those seeking driver’s licence to go through the “eased proper channels”, noting that “tests are conducted frequently and decentralized to the district level.”

He thanked those, who inform the police on this forgery act, and urged the public to always report any wrongdoer.

The suspects risk a jail sentence of three to five years and a fine of up to Rwf3 million as stipulated in article 609 of the penal code.
