Police in the Southern Region have arrested three people, separately, as they attempted to bribe police officers.
The suspects, Emmanuel Mbonabucya, Janvier Kamana and Jean Marie Vianney Nzeyimana were arrested from Nyanza, Kamonyi and Muhanga Districts respectively.
According to the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, all the suspects are drivers who lacked complete documents and attempted to bribe officers at police checkpoints so as they could let them go.
“They were all arrested on the night of April 20 and each of them attempted to bribe officers with Rwf5000; instead, the officers arrested them. We have since transferred their cases to Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB) for farther handling,” said CIP Kayigi.
The spokesperson strongly warned the public against bribery and reminded the public that officers are charged with ensuring high levels of moral discipline and to ensure that roads are safe for all.
“We sensitize the public against corruption and bribery. This is a country that has a zero-stance on such vices and we must fight against it whenever it occurs,” he said
Although bribes are given out or received in secrecy, CIP Kayigi said, the public need to know that authorities have laid stringent measures against corruption and fighting it is a collective responsibility as well.
Article 641 of the Penal Code stipulates that any person who directly or indirectly offers a gift in order to get an illegal service or refrain from carrying out their duties shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of between five and seven years or a fine of twice to ten times the value of what they had offered in bribes or both.
