The Rwanda National Police (RNP) department of Traffic and Road Safety has began a countywide outreach program aimed at sensitizing masses about the services offered by the department and how and where they can be convenient accessed.
The exercise also aims at reaching out to vehicle owners with measures to overcome road accidents.
The program commenced in Musanze on June 5 and will be conducted across the country where officers under traffic police will engage residents on the initiative of responsible driving and road usage, among others.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kabanda, Spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety, while speaking at the launch, urged residents to adhere to traffic rules and regulations and reminded them to always use the right channels while applying for a driver’s license in order to encourage responsible driving.
“Responsibility is paramount for road users including public vehicle operators, private vehicle owners, pedestrians and motorists. If we all play our role by being responsible, we will be able to overcome road accidents and improve road safety,” he said.
He added that reckless acts by road users cause fatal accidents, noting that vehicles should always be maintained in good mechanical conditions that render them safe.
He also appealed to owners of public vehicles and heads of travel agencies to carry out screening to employ disciplined drivers who will adhere to traffic signs and drive carefully to protect the lives of their passengers.
The exercise in Musanze also enabled fruitful discussions between traffic officers and residents, as regards the several services offered by police to road users and how they can be improved.
During the awareness , officers also conducted mechanical inspection of vehicles operating in and around Musanze using Mobile motor vehicle inspection lane.
