Traffic Month: Road safety awareness continues in Ruhango, Gicumbi, Karongi and Kicukiro

The 2015 road safety awareness activities continued in the districts of Gicumbi, Ruhango, Kicukiro and Karongi where road users were educated and sensitized on road traffic rules and regulations.

On Wednesday and Thursday, police officers were joined by partners including local leaders to teach students, drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians on proper use of roads, a move aimed at reducing traffic accidents and promote road security.

The activities in all the districts were also marked with establishing and painting Zebra Crossings and putting fliers and stickers on vehicles and motorcycles, with road safety messages.

In the Southern Province, the Ruhango District Police Commander, Superintendent Richard Rubagumya challenged drivers to drive carefully and observe roadside safety signs.

“Some drivers care less about their speed, overtaking in corners and don’t value their life and that of their passengers,” Supt. Rubagumya said.

The activities in Ruhango were also attended by teachers and heads of schools, who resolved include road safety awareness in their respective schools and form Anti-Crime Clubs.

“Such clubs help other members to understand more on issues of security and their role in crime prevention and road safety. You need to nurture children in a responsive way...children with knowledge on personal safety and that of others,” he told the mentors.

In Gicumbi, the head teacher of Mugina secondary school, Solange Mukandafite commended Rwanda National Police for extending road safety tips to their students.

She appealed to the students to desist from playing in the middle of the road, look both sides before crossing the road and be a voice of community safety by owning the proactive concept of community policing.

In Kicukiro, the road safety awareness benefited about 5, 500 students from seven schools. The schools are GS Busanza, GS Rubirizi, Martyrs, GS Kimisange, Mburabuturo and Masaka.
