Traffic Month ends at a high note

The Road Safety Month came to an end this week after campaigns held in all concerns of the country and reaching out to majority of the road users.

Launched on September 07, the Road Safety Month was held under the theme “Respect Traffic Rule: Save Lives”. The month long campaign came to an end on October 07.

 The exercise was conducted in line with sensitizing road users on road safety standards with an objective of  enhancing public knowledge on traffic rules and regulations with a view to prevent accidents and dangers of violation of traffic rules.

In partnership with its stakeholders and local leaders, Rwanda National Police centered most of its tutorials on traffic rules and teaching students how to use roads and traffic lights.

Apart of the last activities of the Road Safety Month, is a campaign held in Nyamagabe district on October 07 that targeted people from different categories.

The campaign was held in Nyamagabe main roundabout in Gasaka sector. Nyamugari cell and presided over by the district mayor Philbert Mugisha and the District Police Commander Superintendent of Police (SP) François Segakware.

 “It is in the interest of all to abide by traffic rules. When violating traffic rules, you mau cause an accident but you don’t know whose life you are putting in danger, the victim can be anyone, he can be your relative or even yourself,” said Mayor Mugisha.

 The mayor’s message was mainly directed to drivers, commercial motorcyclists and cyclists.

“You should always avoid anything that may cause an accident. Major causes of fatal road accidents include over speeding, reckless driving and using telephones while driving among other causes,” said SP Segakware

He added that; “Passengers should always report any violence of Traffic rules while pedestrians should always use zebra crossings. With regards to commercial motor cycling, we previously experienced some riders who carry two passengers at ago; this is violation of traffic rules and should be stopped.”

Similar events were held in Nyabihu and Karongi districts on October 06, where police officers partnered with local leaders in educating the public on road usage and safety.
