Traffic Month: Bugesera cyclists pledge to streamline their business

As part of the ongoing 2015 road safety month, commercial cyclists operating in Nyamata town of Bugesera district have committed to ensure their bicycles are road-worthy and abide by traffic rules.

They made the commitment following their meeting with Rwanda National Police officers who educated them about road usage and safety on Monday September 5.

While speaking at the meeting, the President of Nyamata association of cyclists, Nathan Byukusenge, said, “We are grateful to Rwanda National Police for reaching out to us over the road safety awareness. It’s important to understand what we are required to operate in an orderly and safe environment.”

He added that; “In the next one week, we will ensure all our bicycles are road-worthy and we are also requesting to be allocated parking stations.”

Assistant Inspector of Police Janvier Renzaho, who is in-charge of traffic in Bugesera District educated cyclists about road safety and thanked them for their commitment to cooperate in ensuring safer roads.

“Avoid carrying more than one person on a bicycle and always ensure you have headlights and side mirrors for those who work at night,” he told cyclists.

The exercise in Bugesera follows similar awareness in the district that benefited pupils and students in various schools, and transporters.

This year’s exercise focuses much on students.

It is part of the Road Safety Month which was officially launched on September 7 held under the theme “Respect Traffic Rule: Save Life.”

The exercise was conducted in line with sensitizing road users on road safety standards with an objective of  enhancing public knowledge on traffic rules and regulations with a view to prevent accidents and dangers of violation of traffic rules.
