The United Nations Deputy Police Adviser, Shaowen Yang, has commended Rwanda National Police (RNP) peacekeepers operating under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Central African Republic (MINUSCA), for their professionalism and discipline.
Yang who led a delegation of UN officials made the remarks on August 2 in Bangui while visiting the Rwanda Protection Support Unit (RWAPSU).
RWAPSU is the first contingent of its kind to be deployed in UN mission by Rwanda National Police.
He also commended Rwanda for her prompt response to the international community’s call for peacekeeping worldwide and in Central African Republic in particular.
“Rwandan police peacekeepers have maintained high discipline and professionalism in all the missions they served in,” Yang observed.
“I sincerely thank Rwandan peacekeepers and Rwanda in general for its contribution in peacekeeping mission; I consider this as an indicator of commitment of Rwandans to sustain peace in the world,”
At RWAPSU base camp, Yang who was accompanied by MINUSCA Police Commissioner Louis Carlo was received by the contingent commander Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benoit S. Kayijuka.
In a presentation, ACP Kayijuka gave them an overview of their assigned duties since the contingent was deployed in CAR last year.
Their assignments included providing security to second winner of the first round of presidential election, providing security during the Pope’s visit in CAR and protection of various government officials.
Currently RNP maintains close to 370 police peacekeepers serving in CAR. Among them include two contingents deployed as Formed Police Unit (FPU), a contingent of PSU and Individual Police Officers (IPO).
