Three men said to have been ambushing and violently stealing valuables from people in Kimisagara Sector, Nyarugenge District, have been arrested.
They were apprehended this Friday at about 10pm in Akishuri Village, Kimisagara Cell in Kimisagara Sector.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie-Gorrette Umutesi, Police spokesperson for the Central region, said that Hakizimana Eric, 30, Twagirimana Evaliste, 34, and Ngamije Boniface, 22, were taken into custody after violently stealing valuables including a smartphone from one of the victims, whom they had left unconscious.
"A community night patrol in Kimisagara, while on patrol, heard someone screaming and calling for help. They ran for the rescue of the desperate person," CIP Umutesi said.
She added: "On arrival, they found the victim on the roadside lying down, thieves had already fled the scene. The community night patrol called Police officers in the area, who were also on patrol. The three suspects were apprehended as they were fleeing."
The three suspects have since been handed over to RIB at Kimisagara station.
Two of the suspects have been identified by local residents to be behind series of thefts in Kimisagara, where they used to ambush people at night.
Article 168 of law No. 68/2018 of 30/08/2018 relating to offences and penalties in Rwanda, stipulates that, "if theft is carried out with violence or threats, the penalty is an imprisonment for a term of not less than five years and not more than seven years and a fine of not less than Rwf3 million and not more than Rwf5 million."
