Three people, including a driver and two motorcyclists have been arrested separately in connection with attempting to bribe police officers, after they were caught in traffic-related offences.
One of the suspects; Jean de Dieu Ntegeyimana was arrested on June 21 in Rubavu District after he tried to offer a bribe of Rwf40, 000 to release his motorcycle that had been impounded after the rider was found without a permit.
The motorcycle RD 031K had been impounded to on June 2 when one Twagirayezu was, who was riding it at the time, was caught without a permit.
Two other suspects; Yves Ufitimana (driver) and Vincent Ntivuguruzwa (motorcyclist) were arrested separately on Thursday in Rubavu and Karongi districts, respectively.
Police spokesperson for the Western Province, Theobard Kanamugire, while confirming the arrests, said: “On June 22, at about 4pm, Ufitimana, while trying to bail his Fuso vehicle plate number RAB 271, which had been intercepted transporting trees without legal authorization papers, he tried to offer a bribe of Rwf10, 000, and he was immediately taken into custody over the crime.”
He is currently detained at Gisenyi Police Station pending subsequent judicial process.
Narrating on Ntivuguruzwa’s arrest, the spokesperson said: “After his motorcycle RC 094P was impounded in Bwishyura Sector over traffic-related offences, he followed the officer, who was in-charge and offered him a bribe of Rwf2, 000, and that’s when he was immediately arrested and currently detained at Bwishyura police station.”
He warned against such criminal tendencies adding that “there will be no mercy for whoever will be caught in these malpractices.”
He advised the public to always follow the law and other guiding legal tools rather than taking actions that put them in conflict with the law.
The spokesperson particularly pointed at motorists as the majority group with tendencies of attempting to bribe police officers, warning of “severe action.”
