Three people, all drivers have been arrested in Kigali for allegedly attempting to bribe police officers after they were found violating traffic rules.
They were apprehended, separately, on November 7 in Gasabo district. The suspects are identified as, Diogene Munyaneza, Fisi Kanyomozi and Fredrick Nzaramba.
The trio is currently detained at Gisozi Police Station.
The bribes ranged between Rwf2, 000 and Rwf5, 000, Police said.
One of the suspects; Munyaneza is accused of attempting to bribe a police officer to avoid penalties after he was caught for over-loading in Kibagabaga.
Nsekanabo on the other hand also offered a bribe of Rwf2000 to prevent the officer from penalizing him for not having a transport authorization, normally issued by the utility regulatory body, RURA.
The suspects, who confessed to the crime, begged to be pardoned.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Costa Habyara, Commissioner for Inspectorate Services and Ethic department in Rwanda National Police warned drivers against graft.
“Drivers know what constitutes a traffic offence and if they violate road safety rules, they will be penalized, but trying to seduce officers with money to look on the side, they will be committing another serious offence and they will also be arrested and face justice because corruption is an abomination in RNP and the country in general,” ACP Habyara said.
