Three arrested in Police crackdown against motorcycle theft

Police recovered three motorcycles on Saturday, which were stolen recently.

Two of the motorcycles were recovered in Ngoma District while the third motorcycle was recovered in Kicukiro District, Police said.

At least three people were arrested in the two separate operations against motorcycle theft.

Chief Insepector of Police (CIP( Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said that in the evening of October 10, a motorcycle plate number RB 097V was reported stolen in Kayonza District.

"Police later that evening received information from motorcyclists that they had seen someone riding the same motorcycle along Kayonza-Ngoma highway," CIP Kanamugire said.

He added: "There was quick information sharing between the District Police Units of Kayonza and Ngoma with motorcyclists in the two districts, and that's how we later got to know that the suspected thieves had arrived at their exact destination in Murama Sector in Ngoma."

The spokesperson said that Police in Ngoma later that night raided the house in Murama, where the motorcycle was spotted.

"It was like killing a bird with one stone because when they entered the house they found two motorcycles; the same motorcycle RB 097V that was stolen that very day and another plate number RD 111Y, which was also reported stolen recently," CIP Kanamugire explained.

Two men were at the time found disassembling the motorcycles although one managed to escape the arrest, he said.

Meanwhile, another motorcycle plate number RE 683I, which was stolen last week in Kimironko, Gasabo District, was recovered in Kicukiro.

At about 5am on October 9, a commercial motorcyclist identified as Eric Niyonkuru picked a passenger in Bumbogo.

Niyonkuru said that as they reached in a bushy area in Izindiro the passenger told him to stop.

"Before I could even think of where we were two people appeared from the Bush and together with the person who was guising as a passenger they tied me with a rope, dumped me there and took off with my motorcycle," Niyonkuru narrated.

CIP Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that the motorcycle was recovered after the would-be buyer in Kicukiro became suspicious and called the Police.

"On Saturday, a motorcycle mechanic in Nyarugunga was approached by two men with a motorcycle and they wanted him to buy it at a very cheap price," CIP Kayigi said.

"The would-be buyer became suspicious because the motorcycle had no number plates; they had been plucked off. He immediately called the Police and the two men were arrested at the scene. When the officers verified they found it was the same motorcycle stolen from Niyonkuru the previous day," Kayigi added.

The spokespersons commended the role of the public in timely information sharing, which facilitated the recovery of the motorcycles and arrest of suspected thieves.

They emphasized the importance of reporting in time whenever a crime is committed to facilitate timely response to recover what is stolen and arrest suspects immediately.
