Police in Ruhango District has arrested three people including a woman, in connection with house break-in especially targeting domestic appliances.
Sadam Nzamurambahano, 40, Lambert Ndagijimana, 25 and Beatrice Musabyimana, 30, were busted during a targeted Rwanda National Police (RNP) operation in Bweramana Sector conducted on August 24.
Police also recovered assorted electronic gadgets that include four television sets and three DVD players, from the suspects at the time of their arrest.
Mobile phones, mattresses and clothes are among the stolen goods that were recovered from the trio.
The recovered items, Police said, had been stolen from homes in Ruhango while others were stolen in Kigali and taken to Ruhango where they intended to get buyers.
The arrest is part of the countrywide operation targeting thieves, especially those who break into houses at night and steal electronics.
Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Hubert Gashagaza, noted that although burglary seemed a common crime in the past, they have since been reduced due to strong partnership between Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the residents who provide credible information on suspected offenders.
“Theft of electronics, in the past, used to be reported more than domestic violence and drug abuse. We have been alert and worked with residents to conduct successful operations that have kept the crime low,” CSP Gashagaza said.
“By working closely together, we will fight collectively and overcome criminals and keep our societies safe and secure.”
He also called on residents to conduct more of neighborhood watch and night patrols, adding that police networking with residents enables crime prevention.
He urged residents who lost their gadgets to report to the nearest police stations and check whether some of the recovered items belong to them.
In related details, Police operations conducted in different parts of City of Kigali in the past two years recovered an assortment of electronics, which are currently stored at Kigali Metropolitan Police Headquarters in Remera.
According to Supt. Modeste Mbabazi, Police spokesperson for the Central region, at least one hundred television sets that include flat screens and over one hundred computers have been recovered and called on the rightful owners to collect them.
Other recovered items include home theaters, speakers, decoders, DVD decks and car radios.
In a previous interview with Supt. Mbabazi, he said; “majority were seized since last year from various black electronic shops. All that is required of the victims is to come and check and if they identify theirs, they will be required to produce supporting documents to claim them.”
The public can also call 0788311829, for further details regarding their items.
It is said that some of these electronics are bought on black market and rightful owners lack supporting documents to claims them, a reason why Mbabazi said some of the equipment haven't been collected for the past years.
