Commercial motorcyclists operating in City of Kigali have been warned against reckless riding behaviors and violating traffic rules leading to fatal accidents.
While speaking to thousands of taxi-moto operators at Nyamirambo stadium on Thursday, Commissioner of Police (CP) Rafiki Mujiji, the Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety Department, said that majority of the accidents are due to carelessness of commercial motorcyclists.
“You are fond of speeding, violating traffic control lights, zebra crossing and bad maneuvers; these are deadly behaviors through which some of your colleagues and other road users have lost lives,” CP Mujiji said.
“These dangerous habits should stop; you should sensitize and advise your colleagues who are fond of these habits.”
He urged them to always be part of solutions by being more cautious and responsible while on road.
“You have to change your behaviors, understand and respect traffic rules… don’t be the problem… value and save your lives and those of other people using the same road. We need full partnership with all motorcycle cooperatives to come up with effective measures against errant motorcyclists,” CP Mujiji said.
Daniel Ngarambe, the head of the federation of motorcycle cooperatives in Rwanda—FERWACOTAMO—also warned his members against reckless and other unlawful behaviors, which tarnish their image, lead to loss of lives and destruction of property.
“Traffic signposts are there to guide you and to make you safe as you go about your economic and social activities,” Ngarambe told the motorcyclists.
Majority of the fatal accidents in the country are either caused by or involve commercial motorcyclists.
