Suspected Police impersonator arrested in Nyarugenge

Police in Nyarugenge District are holding one Feston Bikorimana for allegedly masquerading as a Police officer with intent con money from unsuspecting members of the public.

Police said that on October 26, Bikorimana reportedly falsely represented himself as a police officer to women, whose husband is detained on suspicion of theft.

According to Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the central region police spokesperson, Bikorimana guised as a Police officer, approached the woman, who was in court to attended court proceedings in a theft case against her husband.

“Bikorimana demanded Rwf200. 000 from the woman, promising her that he would release her husband. The suspect also forged a written note in the name of the woman’s husband asking his wife to pay him the money so as to be released without charges,” Supt. Hitayezu said.

“Bikorimana was apprehended by residents later in the evening after noticing that he was attempting to defraud the woman, and took him to the nearby Rwezamenyo Police station with all the exhibits.”

Supt. Hitayezu advised the public never to fall prey to such conmen, noting that giving a bribe is also criminal and that “suspects can only be released by court through usual lawful procedures as specified by the law.”

“No suspect can be released without due processes of the law; the public should not look for short-cuts to the law,” said Supt. Hitayezu

He noted that Bikorimana will be charged for impersonation and forging of documents.

Impersonation and forgery, under article 609 of the penal code is punishable with an imprisonment of between five and seven years, and a fine ranginging between Rwf300, 000 and Rwf3 million.
