Suspected motorcycle thieves arrested

Police in Kicukiro District has arrested two members of the same family in connection with stealing a motorcycle from Rubavu district.

The suspects identified as Shafiq Nshimiyumukuza 24 and his cousin brother Issac Nsenga were arrested on Sunday evening after police received a tip off from taxi-moto operator in the area that the duo were in the process of dismantling and selling the spare parts of the motorcycle.

“They went to two garages looking for mechanics to help them dismantle the motorcycle, but mechanics refused. In the process, a motorcyclist who was nearby, suspected that it could be a stolen motorcycle and called the police, and officers arrived in time and arrested the duo and seized the motorcycle,” said the Central Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Modeste Mbabazi

Preliminary investigations indicate that Nshimiyumukuza stole the motorcycle from Rubavu town earlier that day and rode to Kigali where he linked up with his cousin brother and the two started looking for mechanics to dismantle.

The suspects confessed to the theft, and told the police that they stole the motorcycle from one only identified as Tagawa.

According to Supt Mbabazi, the arrest of the two men indicates the usefulness of timely information sharing.

"The moment an incident is reported, police officers are always ready to intervene in time. This has aided fighting and preventing crimes."

“Criminals have no place in Rwanda and we should always work together through community policing to ensure that peace and safety is sustained and criminals apprehended to face justice,” Supt. Mbabazi said.

Article 300 of the Penal Code stipulates that anyone guilty of theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of the penalties.
