Police has arrested a suspected thief in Gasabo District in connection with stealing a motorcycle, as the force continues operations to rid the country against theft and other crimes.
Identified as Epa Uwimana, the suspect is currently held at Gisozi Police Station, while the motorcycle, which he was found with at the time of his arrest, was returned to the owner identified as Ladislas Habumuremyi.
The Police spokesperson for the Central region, Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi, said that Uwimana allegedly stole the motorcycle on March 3 in Gatsata sector before he was intercepted in Gisozi later in the day, after the owner had been reported to Police.
“His arrest indicates the usefulness of timely information or reporting. The moment he was reported by the owner that he had stolen it, we investigated until we apprehended him in the evening of the same day,” Supt. Mbabazi said.
“Criminals have no place in Rwanda and we should always work together with residents through community policing to ensure that peace and safety is sustained and criminals apprehended to face justice.”
The motorcycle owner, Habumuremyi, thanked Police for being swift and returning his motorcycle which he uses for business.
“I am a commercial motorcyclist and it is this business that helps me to get money to take care of my family’s needs. I am very glad that not even a day has past – Police has found my stolen motorcycle and returned it to me in good condition,” he said.
Article 300 of the Penal Code stipulates that anyone guilty of theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of the penalties.
