Police in Musanze District is holding two women suspected after they were caught trafficking over 8000 rolls of cannabis.
The suspects identified as Jeannette Uwinema and Sabine Itekirakoze were arrested recently in a police operation conducted in Muhoza sector, Cyabararika cell.
They are currently held at Muhoza police station pending further investigation.
According to the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, the arrest came as a reaction from a tip-off from a resident, who had seen the duo with the drugs.
He urged the public to continue partnering with security organs through provision of timely information towards the protection of communities against psychotropic substances.
Constant operations and sensitizations have been conducted by RNP and its partners in crime prevention to end drug trafficking and abuse especially among border communities
“To overcome this challenge, dealers in narcotics must be brought to justice, but we should recognize and encourage the wider role that partnership between Police and the general public continues to play in reducing the impact of this scourge on our communities,” he added.
RNP continuously engages in breaking the supply chain of narcotics by mapping-out individuals and groups as well as routes used to traffic drugs, which has led to the arrest of several dealers, most of whom have been prosecuted and sentenced while the substances seized are destroyed.
Article 594 of the penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
