Suspected drug dealers arrested with 265kgs of cannabis

Police in Gasabo district has arrested two suspected drug traffickers after they were found in possession of 265 kilogrammes of cannabis.

Thimothe Mpamo and Siyani Turikumana, both commercial motorcycle operators were apprehended on June 29 in Jabana sector in Gasabo.

They are currently detained at Gisozi Police station as investigations continue.

Supt. Modeste Mbabazi, Police spokesperson for central region said the suspects were working with one Alexis Ntawibyara, also a resident of Jabana.

Ntawibyara is still at large. The narcotics were recovered in Ntawibyara's house.

"Ntawibyara is the suspected supplier of cannabis while Mpamo and Turikumana were helping him to sell it," Supt. Mbabazi said.

He explained that the illegal business came to light after the two motorcyclists went to Ntawibyara's house demanding to be paid for helping him sell the illegal drug.

"They failed to reach an understanding and they started fighting which prompted area residents to call Police. When Police arrived, they recovered 265 kilogrammes of cannabis in 1163 roles," he said.

He commended area residents for reporting the matter in time that led to the seizure of the narcotics and to arrest the culprits.

He also appealed to owners of rental houses to always monitor and know what their tenants do.

Both Turikumana and Mpamo, however, argued that they have been transporting  Ntawibyara with his luggage without knowing that it was marijuana.
