Suspected city pickpocket arrested

A man, who has been snatching people's valuables and breaking into vehicles was arrested on Wednesday in Nyarugenge District. 

The suspect is said to have been vandalizing car windows targeting mainly electronics, which he was selling on the black market. 

According to Chief Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, the suspect was caught in the act after breaking into the car in Kiyovu.

"He had stolen an HP laptop computer, Rwf50, 000 and other valuables, which he was found with at the time," CIP Kayigi said. 

According to the spokesperson, the continuous operations are meant to arrested people engaged in snatching people's valuables, vandalizing vehicles as well as those who deal in such stolen items.

"Our operations also target black markets dealing in electronics because these are the same people who encourage such criminal acts," he said.

The suspect will be charged under section two of article 166 of the penal code.

The article states that “any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than two years and a fine of not less than Rwf1 million and not more than Rwf2 million, community service in a period of six months or only one of these penalties.
