Students urged to be ambassadors of gender equality

Students should lead their communities against gender-based-violence and preach to their fellow youth against the dangers of engaging with strangers who con them into human trafficking.

The message was delivered by the head of Gender Desk in Kicukiro District, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP), Carmel Ntijumurerwa, during a meeting with over 450 students and staff of Integrated Polytechnic Regional Center (IPRC) in Kicukiro.

Ntijumurerwa warned the students that unless they stand against gender-related crimes which are usually committed in homes due to grudges; their lives may be affected by the scourge.

“Violence against women and children is mostly corporal and psychological, usually committed by men who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The young people in our society should stand up against such acts, and be a light to the elderly whenever they can,” Ntijumurerwa said.

“At times, men beat their wives in order to silence them over their rights, but the children can come in to stop this terrible act by advising their parents. Advice from young people is not being headed as some parents think but rather a sign of respect and maturity.”

She also urged them to fight the consumption and sell of drugs including illicit brew and narcotics which adolescents tend to get addicted to and get influenced to commit crimes.

Agnes Mukamurigo, the Vice Principal in charge of Administration and Finance, lauded Police for constantly reminding the public about gender equality and also counseled the students to take heed to the advice.
