Students of Nyarubuye secondary school up against drugs

Though drug abuse has shown a downward trend due to vigorous measures initiated by the Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with other stakeholders and the general public, few individuals still involve in the vice, majority of whom are the youth.

Strategies to curb the vice and related effects, include anti-drugs awareness campaigns conducted in communities and schools.

On September 8, similar campaign was held in Groupe Scolaire Nyarubuye in Karongi district.

Students and school administration committed to fight wrongdoings including drug abuse.

The Community Liaison Officer for  Karongi District (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP), Jean Baptiste Rutebuka, told the students that, drugs which include cannabis, some illicit brews and gins like Kanyanga, Chief Waragi and Blue Sky, may lure them into crimes like theft, assault and defilement.

He also cited unwanted pregnancies, school drop-outs as other ill-effects of consuming illicit drugs.

IP Rutebuka urged the students to focus on their studies and always provide security organs with timely information on drug dealers.

He appealed to them to report those who may abuse their rights and anything that can cause insecurity.

The students were also told to always pedestrian pathways, use Zebra Crossing and look at both sides of the road before crossing.

Monique Nyirangabire, the school headteacher, lauded Police for the lessons adding that they are key guides in fighting drug abuse and other crimes in their schools and communities.

“The responsibility remains with us school administration to implement the given advices to fight drug abuse in our school and communities,” she observed.

Students also committed to carry on the campaign and report those involved in crimes.
