The mayor of Nyarugenge district, Solange Mukasonga has called upon street vendors to relocate to established markets as a way of avoiding other incidences of insecurity resulting from this unlawful business.
She made the call on May 27 while meeting with sector executive secretaries.
The meeting also attended by the District Police Commander, Chief Supt. Dismas Rutaganira aimed at laying further reinforce safety and security in the district.
Besides being illegal, it is said that some people disguise as hawkers to steal people of their belongings such as snatching ladies bags, pick-pocketing and vandalising car windows targeting electronics.
Mukasonga urged them to sensitize vendors and help them get lock-ups in markets.
She however observed that the good cooperation between local leaders, security organs and the public has improved security in the Central Business District.
Mukasonga also urged them to ensure that night patrols are tightened to prevent crimes.
CSP Rutaganira commended the work of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in reinforcement of security and urged the local leaders to support them in their security activities.
He further appealed to them to sensitize the public on ensuring own safety and providing information on any security threats in their localities.
