Stolen motorcycle recovered, two arrested

Police in Nyamasheke District have arrested two men in connection with theft of a motorcycle.

The motorcycle plate number RAD 457S was reportedly stolen on April 28, in Muhanga District, when thieves forcefully took it from the owner.

One of the thieves posed as a passenger and lured the motorcyclost into the trap.

It was recovered recovered from the suspects; Dominique Niyonkuru and Alphonse Turabumukiza on May 2, in Nyamasheke.

"The suspects were at the time of their arrest trying to sell the motorcycle," Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said.

"The would-be buyer got suspicious because the motorcycle he was trying to buy lacked legal papers. He suspected a foul-play and he contacted the police," CIP Gasasira added.

"When police officers arrived at the scene where the process of selling the motorcycle was taking place, they found that it was the same bike that was reported stolen in Muhanga, and the sellers were immediately taken into custody over theft," he explained.

CIP Gasasira thanked the vigilance of the would-be buyer.

"Always be very sure that what you're buying is genuine. Take time, ask all the relevant papers of the motorcycle or any other thing you're trying to buy, and when you suspect anything unusual inform the Police to erase your doubts," he advised.

“There are a lot of risks in buying stolen items, if this person had gone ahead and bought it, he would have eventually incurred losses, such scenarios are avoidable by doing what is right – report to police whenever you have suspicions,” said the spokesperson.

The bike was later handed over to Abega Mbonigaba, the rightful owner.

Mbonigaba said: “At around 9pm on the night of April 28, a passenger came to me and asked to take him to Shogwe Sector. Along the way, we reached a dark spot and he suddenly asked me to stop saying he had arrived at his final destination; two armed with traditional weapons appeared immediately from the nearby bush, threatened me to get off my motorcycle, all the three sat on it and rode away."

The third suspect is still at large.

Mbonigaba immediately reported the theft to Rwanda Investigations Bureau.

"I was assured that my motorcycle would be recovered and suspected brought to justice. Today I understand what they meant, and I thank them for recovering my motorcycle, which supports my family" he said after receiving his motorcycle.

The case is under RIB for further investigations.

Theft under article 300 of the penal code attracts a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.
