Stolen money recovered in Kamonyi

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Friday, March 4, recovered Frw800,500, which is part of the Frw1.2 million that was recently stolen from a businessman in Kamonyi District.

The money was stolen on Wednesday, March 2, from one Theogene Nkuranga.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Southern Region Police spokesperson, said that the money was recovered from the prime suspect identified as Francois Nsengumuremyi, 42, who was located and arrested at his home in Nyagacyamo Village, Muganza Cell, Runda Sector in Kamonyi District.

"The victim, who deals in maize, reported on Friday that one of his employees, Nsengumuremyi, had disappeared with his money amounting Frw1.2 million. Nkuranga had given the money to Nsengumuremyi on Wednesday March 2, to pay one of the maize farmers in Runda Sector but he disappeared with the money," SP Kanamugire said.

"The Nsengumuremyi was located and arrested at his home in Nyagacyamu Village, Muganza Cell. He had already spent part of the money, with only Frw800, 500 remaining. He was handed over to RIB at Runda station," he added.

Article 166 of the law determining offenses and penalties in general provides that any person convicted for theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than two years and a fine of not less than Frw1 million and not more than Frw2 million, community service in a period of six months or only one of these penalties.
