Stern warning over environment degradation as Police recovers trees cut illegally

Rwanda National Police warns the general population against cutting trees, which pose ill-effects on the environment.

The warning follows series of environmental degradation cases registered in different parts of the country especially involving felling and trafficking of a local plant called kabaruka.

On May 31, Police in Bugesera district discovered a residential house Kabagugu cell filled with kabaruka stumps.

The house belongs to one Pascal Nsengiyaremye, the main suspect, who is still on the run.

Police estimated the trees to be about one tone

"There are some individuals involved in this illegal act as their source of business. We can't put up with such acts and we call upon the general public to stand up against it and report those involved," Senior Supt. Beniot Nsengiyumva, Police spokesperson for the Eastern province, said.

"This is an illegal act and punishable under the Rwandan penal code. Related acts contribute to environment degradation, which, in one way or another, have an effect on people’s health and the economy in general.” he added.

SSP Nsengiyumva reminded that for anyone to cut or transport trees from one area to another , has to seek authorisation from local leaders in the area.
