Sniffer dogs trace narcotics, 2 arrested

Two suspected drugs dealer in Gatore Sector, Kirehe District, were nabbed when sniffer dogs traced drugs in their homes during an anti-narcotics operation, as Rwanda National Police (RNP) continues to employ more efficient methods to curb the scourge.

Identified as Steven Micomyiza, 20, and Robert Hakizimana 34, the suspects were arrested on March 18 when two sniffer dogs led officers to hidden drugs in their homes totaling to 86 sachets of cannabis.

They are currently held at Kirehe Police Station as further investigations continue.

“The operation was launched in a bid to reduce and eventually end the problem of drug abuse and trade in the entire country,” said Senior Superintendent Urbain Mwiseneza, Director of anti-Narcotic Unit in the Criminal Investigation Department.

“The sniffer dogs proved to be useful as we searched suspects’ homes and led us to exactly where the drugs are. RNP thanks residents for their help in provision of information and co-operation while we conducted the campaign.”

"Residents inform us they don’t want drugs in the area and we will continue to work with them and local authorities to ensure anti-drugs safe environments."

Clemetine Uwabayinema, in charge of social affairs in Gatore Sector, commended the role of police in fostering security in the community, which has enabled residents to conduct their activities without interruption.

“This operation indicates Police’s continued efforts to sustain the peace that we enjoy in Rwanda. Residents should therefore always work with Police by providing timely information on drugs dealers and other criminals,” she said.

RNP set up the Canine Brigade Department in 2000 with the objective to tackle two major security challenges in the spread and the use of narcotics, and fighting terrorism through detection of explosives.

The force also has over 80 officers well trained in skills and knowledge in handling sniffer dogs.
