An operation against narcotics continued this Thursday in Musanze District where sniffer dogs traced seven suspected drug dealers, who were arrested.
Varied quantities of cannabis were also recovered from the suspects’ homes, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Northern region Police spokesperson, said.
CIP Twizeyimana identified the suspects as Marie Claire Uwimana, 24, Marthe Nyiramahoro 60; Asumani Niyonkuru, 33; Nadia Muhawenimana; Fatuma Sikuyuwa, 42; Theogene Uwiringiyimana, 24; and Hadja Mbetse, 30.
“The operation facilitated by the canine brigade was conducted in the sectors of Muhoza and Cyuve sectors in homes of the people that we have information they are dealing in drugs,” CIP Twizeyimana said.
“It is part of the countrywide Police operations using sniffer dogs targeting especially places or homes of people suspected to be drug dealers, to strengthen operations to break chains of supply and to kill the local market,” he added.
He also thanked the residents, who continue to work with the police providing information on suspected drug dealers and routes used.
A similar operation was conducted in Kirehe District, last week, where sniffer dogs traced houses where cannabis is stored. Five drug traffickers were arrested in the same operation after they were found with varied quantities of cannabis.
Kirehe is marked as one of the major transit routes for cannabis traffickers, which has seen Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Tanzania Police Force (TPF) joining efforts to conduct joint operations to destroy all cannabis farms especially in the latter’s Kagera region and regular joint marine operations in River Kagera.
