Separate Police operations against smuggling and fraud, conducted on Tuesday, October 17, in Kirehe and Gicumbi districts, led to the seizure of six bales of second-hand clothes that were sneaked into the country through porous border points.
At least one of the smugglers, a 23-year old woman, was arrested during the operation in Gicumbi District, Superintendent of Police (SP) Jean Bosco Mwiseneza, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said.
"She was intercepted at about 7p.m, in Gatuna village, Rwankonjo cell of Cyumba sector in Gicumbi District with a sack of used clothes, which she had smuggled into Rwanda from Uganda," SP Mwiseneza said.
In the Eastern Province, the regional spokesperson, SP Hamdun Twizeyimana said that law enforcement agencies are still searching for a man, who was hiding five bales of used clothes in his house located in Nyakarambi II village, Ruhanga cell, Kigina sector of Kirehe District.
The suspect still in hiding, had smuggled the bales of used clothes into Rwanda from Tanzania.
Article 87 of the law on tax procedures provides an imprisonment of between 2 and 5 years, for tax evasion.
