Police in Bugesera District has seized 13 crates of Amstel, a beer brand that were smuggled into the district through an illegal border, from Burundi.
The crates were confiscated on March 7 from two residential houses in Kagomasi cell of Gashora Sector.
Supt. Richard Rubagumya, the District Police Commander said this beer brand, plastic bags and electrical cables are among major cases of smuggling registered in the district.
“We conduct operations sometimes based on credible information from the general public and our own investigations, where culprits are apprehended and smuggled goods seized,” said Supt. Rubagumya.
“We work with the residents and families residing at the borderline, who in most cases give us information, and they even sometimes apprehend them and call us. This community policing approach is paying off,” he added.
Eastern region Police spokesperson, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi warned the business community and the general public against engaging in illegal businesses.
He noted that the law is clear and anyone who will be caught in any sort of illegal businesses will face the law.
RNP currently has a unit – Revenue Protection Department – that supports the national tax body – RRA – to fight fraud and smuggling, and to enforce the law.
