Police in Burera, Rubavu and Rulindo districts destroyed scores of seized illicit substance worth Rwf7.4 million.

In Burera, the exercise was led by the Executive Secretary of Gahunga Sector, Wilson Amani Mwambutsa and attended by police officers and residents.

At least 2109 cartons of blue sky, 250 cartons of Host Waragi, 154 cartons of Chief waragi, 100 cartons of coffee sprit, 190 cartons of vodka chase, 846 cartons of African gin, and 40 liters of kanyanga, a illicit gin were destroyed in Burera.

During the exercise, Mwambutsa called for ownership in reporting drug dealers:

“When you say no to any illegal dealing or report anything unlawful act, you are promoting safety, security and stability and that way, you are equally contributing to national development.”

The Northern RegionPolice spokesperson Inspector of Police  (IP) Innocent Gasasira, spoke at length why the destroyed substances are illegal in Rwanda and their impact on human health.

“Drug abuse has an effect on someone’s state of mind. Anyone who consumes such substances can’t perform well in class or even succeed in life. You should protect your future, children and friends from this menace. These substances are the root cause of most other crimes,” said the spokesperson.

He advised residents to always cooperate with law enforcers in order to effectively overcome the scourge and reminded them that the fight is the responsibility of every citizen through community policing.

“This public destruction exercise is also a moment to showcase what awaits dealers, discourage residents against joining drug dealing gangs – and to promote trust with residents in ensuring that communities are protected against the effects of drug dealing,” he said.

In Rulindo, Police arrested one Emmanuel Rugira with 1900 pellets of cannabis.
