Security Week launched in Nyanza

A week aimed at fighting drug abuse in schools and promoting security in Nyanza District was launched on March 31 with a call for the youth to own the campaign and fight trade and consumption of narcotics and illicit brew.

The official launch of the exercise held at College du Christ Roi-Nyanza in Busasamana sector was presided over by Ambassador Valens Munyabagisha, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Security.
The event was also attended by students, local leaders and residents.

The week-long exercise will be conducted in various schools in the district.

Amb. Munyabagisha appealed to the youth to desist and report anyone involved in illegal and criminal acts such as drug abuse and gender violence.

He also asked the public not to touch any suspicious objects and report them to nearby security organs to dispose them off.

The district mayor, Abdallah Murenzi said the exercise is aimed at educating the youth, the majority involved in drug related crimes, on the dangers of the vice.

The event also included testimonies of former drug addicts.

“I was a drug addict, which affected my studies. By now, I should be a university graduate,” Jean Bosco Nshimiyimana, one of the students, who urged colleagues not to be held prisoner by drug abuse, said.
