Head of schools have been called upon to take precautionary measures to keep school equipment safe especially in these holidays.
The call follows the theft of students' items at Ecole Secondaire Communautaire de Rucano (ESCOM) in Ngororero District, on July 18.
Chief Inspector of Police( CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Western Region Police spokesperson, said that some of the stolen items, including a computer laptop, clothes and shoes have been recovered.
"The stolen items were recovered from one Evarist Dusengimana, 22, the prime suspect, who was also taken into custody," CIP Kayigi said.
"The suspect broke into the students' dormitory where he stole their belongings," Kayigi said.
"Good enough, some area residents saw him later that night at about 9pm with the items, out of suspicion they called the Police, he was arrested and stolen items recovered."
CIP Kayigi observed that wrongdoers might seize these holidays to steal school equipment and students' items and appealed to school managements to plan ahead to secure them.
Article 166 of Rwandan Penal Code states that “Any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than two years, and a fine of not less than Rwf1 million but not more than Rwf2 million, community service in a period of six months or one of these penalties.”
