Rwandans urged to shun manufacture of illicit brew

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called upon Rwandans to shun the manufacture, sell and consumption of illicit brew which are believed to be dangerous and pose health threat to users.

This message follows an operation last week through which police in Rukoma Sector, Kamonyi District discovered and shut down a distillery that was distilling illicit brew.

Police also seized and destroyed about 2,000 liters of a locally made illicit brew brand known to cause adverse health effects on the lives of its consumers.

The dangerous drinks were destroyed in the presence of residents, as a deterrent measure exemplifying RNP’s zero tolerance to drug abuse.

IP Immacule Mukasano, said that this banned liquor is actually “poisonous”, because its content is questionable and the production process disregard safety procedures.

“That is why police has a continuous campaign against the manufacture, importation and consumption of such liquor. We urge you to join this campaign to identify bars, factories and people that deal in such dangerous products,” she told hundreds of residents who turned up.

“Through partnership with residents, we shall be successful in controlling the primary production of the dangerous liquor and safeguard our population from consuming them, thus prevent insecurity it brings like domestic violence and assault.”

She also warned against drug abuse, noting that every citizen should understand the consequences related to drug abuse and be more determined to fight such.

“Do not collaborate with law breakers who distribute drugs especially to the youth. Always endeavor to work with Police and local authorities to identify those that participate in such illegal activities,” she said.

“Drug abuse is related to insecurity in communities because it affects the consumer’s judgment capabilities. Therefore, security should always be everyone's first priority in all situations in order to protect our lives, our property and safeguard the development of our country.”
