Rwandan Police peacekeepers deployed in Malakal, Upper Nile State under UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), on Friday, October 6, conducted a tree planting exercise as part of their environmental protection drive.
The exercise were attended by UNMISS officials, peacekeepers from other contributing countries and South Sudanese.
Trees were planted around the Protection of Civilian (PoC) camp, which is under the protection of Rwanda Formed Police Unit-One (RWAFPU-1).
The human security activity also served as a platform to sensitize the local residents on the importance of trees and protecting the environment.
They were also sensitized on ill-effect of abusing drugs as part of community policing programmes.
Yohenes Kimo, the chairman of Malakal PoC thanked the Rwandan Police peacekeepers for ensuring their safety and efforts to help them to abstain from illicit drugs.
"We are safe and that's because you are here to make sure that our security is guaranteed. We thank you and your country for that human spirit," Kimo added
He urged the residents to emulate such proactive practices, to plant more trees and to protect those that have been planted to create a green and safe environment.
The RWAFPU1-8 Contingent Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mudathir Twebaze commended the residents for their collaboration and support in ensuring their security.
"With your support, we are always able to provide security and achieve our mandated task. This productive collaboration provides an opportunity to engage in such human security activities," said SSP Twebaze.
