Rwandan peacekeepers mark 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

Rwandan peacekeepers serving under United Nations missions in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) joined the global community on Tuesday, April 7, to mark the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The commemoration is observed under the theme “Remember–Unite–Renew,” honoring the memory of more than one million lives lost during the 100-day period of targeted massacres.

The separate commemoration events brought together Rwandan troops, members of the Rwandan diaspora and friends, as well as peacekeepers from other contributing countries.

Across mission areas, participants engaged in symbolic acts including a Walk to Remember, the lighting of a Flame of Remembrance, and a moment of silence to pay tribute to the victims.

In South Sudan, commemorative events were held in the capital, Juba, as well as Malakal in Upper Nile State. Rwanda maintains two police contingents in the country, including the Rwanda Formed Police Unit One (RWAFPU1), which is deployed in Malakal and RWAFPU3 in Juba.

In the Central African Republic, Kwibuka activities were conducted in multiple locations. These included the capital, Bangui, where RWAFPU1 and the Rwanda Protection Support Unit (RWAPSU) are stationed, as well as Kaga Bandoro and Bangassou, where RWAFPU2 and RWAFPU3 contingents, respectively, operate.
