A contingent of Rwanda National Police (RNP) serving under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) returned home on Wednesday, March 11, after successfully completing their tour-of-duty in the Central African Republic.
The Rwanda Formed Police Unit Three (RWAFPU3-3), which was operating in Bangassou, was received at Kigali International Airport by Commissioner of Police (CP) Yahya Kamunuga, Commissioner for Peace Support Operations, on behalf of the RNP leadership.
The contingent commanded by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Thomas Kayonga, was replaced by RWAFPU3-4 under the command of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, which departed earlier to begin their one-year peacekeeping assignment.
While welcoming the officers back home, CP Kamunuga commended them for their discipline, professionalism and commitment demonstrated throughout the mission.

"You were deployed to represent your country, and you carried out your duties with professionalism,” said CP Kamunuga. “The leadership of Rwanda National Police appreciates your dedication and the positive image you portrayed during the mission.”
Speaking on behalf of the returning contingent, Superintendent of Police (SP) Bernard Gatete said that during their deployment, the officers successfully fulfilled their mandate, particularly the protection of civilians and supporting peace and stability in the region.
He noted that beyond their core security responsibilities, the contingent also engaged in community development activities aimed at improving the welfare of local residents.

“These initiatives included providing access to clean water, providing free medical outreach services, and participating in monthly communal work activities together with residents and local security organs,” SP Gatete said.
The contingent also established a youth football team, Amahoro FC, which helped strengthen relations with the local community through sports and social engagement.
SP Gatete further noted that the contingent arrived in the Central African Republic during the electoral period, where they contributed to ensuring the security of the process, including escorting and safeguarding election materials.
Rwanda remains among the leading Police contributors to UN peacekeeping operations.
