Rwanda National Police warns parents and guardians

Following a number cases of children drowning in ponds and swimming pools, the Rwanda National Police is warning parents and guardians to stop abandoning their children especially the time of rainy season.

The calls follows a recent incident in Gihundwe sector, Rusizi District where Emmanuel Nayituriki 7 drowned in river Gitinga.

The deceased had allegedly gone to fetch water..

Parents are advised not to abandon or allow children to play around water ponds, lakes, rivers and swimming pools without an elder person watching.

Lakes and other water bodies pose a serious danger to children. The Rwanda National Police appeals to parents and guardians to keep an open eye.

Drowning is commonly in two trends. Children in rural areas tend to drown in ponds, lakes and/or rivers. Many children who live near lakes and rivers are tempted to go fetching, fishing or swimming without elders watching. And such children risk drowning.

Rwanda National Police reminds the public that it is a parental obligation to take care of their children, but also a responsibility of every Rwandan to protect children for any harm.
