Rwanda National Police has given a stern warning to illegal miners whose activities are a great danger to the environment and surrounding communities.
This warning follows a land slide that occurred in Rukumba Cell, Rutare Sector, Gicimbi District, where three individuals were buried and killed by falling debris inside a mine cliff, while a fourth escaped with serious injuries and was rushed to Byumba Hospital.
The victims had gone to extract lime, which is used as a paint liquid, without permission from the land owner and without protective gadgets.
The Northern Region Spokesperson Superintendent Christopher Semuhungu, condemned the habit and urged residents to avoid risky and illegal mining.
He warned the residents against extracting lime illegally especially in this wet season which makes soil soft and landslides more apparent.
“You should resort to using authorized legal means and use protective gear to protect from harm. Such occurrences can be avoided because lives of people are very important,” he said.
