Rwanda National Police hosts Kent State University students to learn about policing and transformation journey

Rwanda National Police (RNP) hosted students from Kent State University in United States of America on Thursday, July 16, at the General Headquarters in Kacyiru as part of an educational study tour designed to bridge classroom learning with practical institutional experience.

Led by Dr. Sarah Schmidt, Assistant Professor of Political Science, the students are in Rwanda as part of the academic programme themed "Rwanda After the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi," which offers firsthand insights into Rwanda's post-genocide transformation through engagement with key national institutions.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, DCG Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, welcomed the delegation, noting that the visit reflects the strong partnership between the Rwanda National Police and Kent State University.

"We are delighted to host your delegation once again. This collaboration provides an opportunity to share Rwanda's experience in rebuilding public trust, promoting community policing, maintaining public safety, and supporting the country's post-genocide recovery and sustainable peace," DCG Ujeneza said.

During the visit, the students were taken through the transformation journey of the Rwanda National Police and briefed on its history, organisational structure, mandates, community policing model, and partnerships that have contributed to public safety, security, and socio-economic development.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Dr. Sarah Schmidt thanked the Rwanda National Police for its continued hospitality and partnership, describing the Force's community policing model as exemplary and a valuable learning experience for students of peacebuilding and public safety.

The visit builds on the long-standing partnership between the Rwanda National Police and Kent State University. Since its inception in 2023, the partnership has supported the advanced education of 11 RNP officers, including six who graduated from the University, and five currently pursuing their studies.
