The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on schools, transport agencies, drivers, parents, and the general public to support student safety as they begin traveling home for the end-of-year school holidays.
According to the Ministry of Education's academic calendar, boarding students in primary and secondary schools will travel home from June 29 to July 2, prompting the police to call for shared responsibility to ensure safe and smooth journeys.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety Department, urged school leaders to take the lead in helping students travel safely.
“School leaders should issue students’ report cards early so that they leave school in time, get transport early, and arrive home without delays,” SSP Kayigi said.
He also asked schools to monitor students as they leave school premises while wearing their uniforms, saying this makes it easier for them to access public transport.
“We request schools to make sure that students are putting on uniforms and follow up on their movements after they leave school because the uniform helps them get assistance and easily find transport,” he added.
SSP Kayigi also appealed to drivers and other passengers to support students during their journeys. “We encourage all transport operators and other travelers to help students during their movements so they can reach their families safely,” he said.
As students begin their holidays, the police spokesperson reminded them to use the break responsibly by spending time with family, helping their parents, and reviewing their studies.
He warned students against joining groups that may influence them into drug abuse, crime, or other harmful behaviors.
“Do not involve yourselves in drug abuse because it puts your lives at risk. Report anyone involved in using, transporting, or selling illegal drugs,” he urged.
The police also reminded parents to protect their children during the long holiday period and prevent exposure to harmful influences.
