In a bid to maintain a solid contingent in the mission area, the Rwanda Formed Police Unit (RWA-FPU) serving under the United Nations Mission in Haiti organized a football tournament that was aimed at fostering the culture of sports while in the mission ,promoting unity and the relationship with local residents of Haiti.
The “Dukunde Sports Tournament” lasted for two months from March 20 to May 24 and participants included officers in the platoons 1, 2, 3 and HQ of the Rwandan peacekeepers.
“The motive of the tournament was, among other things, to improve the sports culture among the police officers, enhance recreational activities and improve good working relationships both at work and in their base camp,” Commissioner Bruce Munyambo, the contingent Commander, said.
“Engaging in sports improves health and builds resistance to stress in addition to healing homesickness due to spending long time detached from their families."
“More importantly, such sports events bolster Community policing and help peacekeepers to engage with the residents and win their trust and confidence.”
Platoon 3 won the tournament after beating Platoon two 3-1 in the finals.
After providing the trophy to the winning platoon, awards were also presented to the best players and the most dedicated participants in different categories.
Award for the most outstanding player who reflected professionalism and discipline throughout the tournament was presented to Sergeant James Kamanzi, while award for top scorer went to Corporal Daniel Shumbusho.
Local Haitians who participated in the tournament were also awarded, including referees Michel Marco and Dominique Dimy, as well as linesman, James Luc Alexandre.
Sports is one of the strategies Rwanda National Police uses to cement the concept of community policing in the country.
Currently, RNP has a football club, a handball club and participates in athletics, among others.
