Rwamagana: Religious leaders called to reinforce human security activities

Clerics in Rwamagana District have been called upon to reinforce human security activities and preach against criminality.

The call was made on November 13, during a meeting that brought together religious leaders, local leaders and security organs.

The vice mayor of Rwamagana in charge of finance and economic development, Regis Mudaheranwa observed that religious leaders can play an impact by engaging their followers in "individual and collective" policing and community development matters.

"Educate and encourage your followers to practice family planning, be part of Early Childhood Development programme, subscribe to mituelle de sante (community health insurance) and fight illicit drugs," Mudaheranwa said.

He also urged them to ensure that their structures or places of worship are up to standard to resist strong winds and prevent loss of lives.

He said the district is going to start inspection of all your structures to ensure that they meet the required standards.

Inspector of Police (IP) Marie Gorette Uwimana, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Rwamagana also embarked on common crimes that requires partnership at all levels to address.

“We are still seeing many cases of drug dealers and distillers of illicit substances, teenage pregnancies and child abuse, and gender based violence. Addressing them requires all levels in including faith-based groups to preach and send the message against such criminal acts," IP Uwimana said.

Reports indicate that the number of teen mothers is high in the districts of Gatsibo, Nyagatare, Kirehe, Bugesera, Gasabo, Rubavu, Kayonza, Musanze, Ngoma and Rwamagana.
