Residents of Rwamagana District have been urged to desist from drug abuse and consumption of illicit brews which could lead to crime commission due to impaired condition. They are also called to engage in sports activities as a way of staying healthy.
This message was delivered on January 20, after a monthly sport exercise in Kigabiro Sector, Rwamagana District.
The exercise was attended by the Eastern province Governor, Fred Mufuruke flanked by the Eastern Region Police Commander (RPC), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benoit Kayijuka.
Present were also students from secondary schools in Kigabiro sector and police officers operating in the area.
Governor Mufuruke reiterated the benefits of sports against preventable diseases.
"There are some emerging diseases caused by stress, over-weight (obesity) and many others…, So you have to do constant sports to avoid all these diseases" he explained.
The Regional Police Commander (RPC) called on his part, called on Rwamagana residents to avoid drug abuse and consumption of dangerous alcoholic drinks because they are destroying lives of citizens especially the youths.
ACP Kayijuka said, police operations have seized variety of drugs across the district and arrested criminals in possession of drugs such as cannabis and outlawed alcoholic drinks.
He urged to the population to cooperate with security agencies and local authorities and timely share information to fight and prevent all drug related crimes.
The RPC warned that, drugs not only have health effects but lead to criminal acts like rape, early pregnancies, violence which result into imprisonment.
The sports exercise was attended by close to 300 people.
Police use sports activities as part of its community policing methodology to sensitize masses against lawlessness.
