Police in the Eastern Province have urged youth there to heighten their anti-drugs activities in order to minimize occurrence of crime in the area.
Police say illicit drug consumption and excessive alcohol consumption have been identified as the main source of majority crimes in communities.
This was part of the message delivered in Rwamagana District on October 5, by the Regional Police Cmmander-Eastern Province, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benoit Kayijuka while addressing students of Agahozo Sharon Secondary School.
The message was delivered after a friendly football match between the Eastern region Police team and Agahozo Sharon Secondary School.
Police won the match by 1-0.
The RPC urged the youngsters to report anyone they suspect to be engaged in selling and abusing drugs
"It's dangerous to indulge in making, trafficking, selling and abusing narcotic drugs; you will either be arrested or you will be putting your lives to waste as an addict," ACP Kayijuka told the students.
He, however, appealed to them to report their fellow students or youth that abuse drugs so as to be helped and rehabilitated.
"What we've always told you is, 'stay away from drugs. They have a negative impact on your education, health and the community in general," the RPC added.
He noted that some students perform poorly in schools because they engage in abuse abusing drugs while others end up dropping out of school.
"Schools are built for your nurture you into responsible and future leaders, don't put such chances to waste; the future of our country and depends on how healthy the young generation is."
He also hinted on the issue of child and unwanted pregnancies and urged the school-girls to stay safe, desist from temptations and peers influence, and report men that attempt to seduce them into sexual malpractices.
Sensitisation is one of the measures through which Rwanda National Police and partners employ to fight the vice of drugs mainly by identifying and arresting drug dealers, routes used and ensuring that addicts are rehabilitated.
