Rwamagana: Mayor calls for security ownership

The Mayor of Rwamagana District, Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi called upon residents to equally be custodians of safety and security by working with security organs in activities that are designed to ensure sustainable security as a firm ground for development.

The mayor was speaking in Sasabirago Cell, Fumbwe Sector where he addressed about 1000 residents.

He urged them to have the primary responsibility in matters of security and ownership of community policing initiatives.

“Security and reporting lawbreakers is an obligation to everyone. Security is the cornerstone for development. We cannot expect economic progress in communities while some of the families are going through endless misunderstandings and fighting,” the mayor said.

He called for cooperation with security organs through information sharing to prevent particularly crimes such as; illicit drugs, Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse and child pregnancies.

The Mayor also challenged the residents to reinforce night patrols to avert criminals that may take advantage of night like thieves and drug dealers.

Supt. James Rutaremara, the District Police Commander reminded that drug abuse fuels other criminal activities such as; assault, theft, rape and defilement.

“Prevention of crimes particularly drug abuse, requires responsibility of all of us, young or adults. Real time information sharing on drug dealers is paramount for quick response and arrest of dealers,” the DPC said.

He further appealed to residents to also avoid family conflicts and taking matters into their hands but rather report such matters to concerned entities like police and local authorities.

Similar outreach programme was also carried out in all sectors of Rwamagana.
