Rwamagana: Man arrested attempting to bribe police officer

Police in Rwamagana District has arrested Francois Nsengiyumva, 48, attempting to bribe the officer on duty.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson of Eastern region, said that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday in Nzige Cell, Nzige Sector attempting to bribe the officer with Rwf100, 000 to abandon the case of Fabien Manikunzwe, 35, his relative and an illegal brewer, who managed to escape law enforcers on September, 14, 2019 while he was distilling ‘Kanyanga’ a psychotropic substance, banned in Rwanda.

“In September, we received information from local residents, that in their area some people have illegal breweries, we conducted an operation against psychotropic substances and found Manikunzwe distilling Kanyanga at his home, he was by then in possession of 400 liters, he managed to escape, from September he was still in hiding,” CIP Twizeyimana narrated.

The spokesperson added that Manikunzwe has sent Nsengiyumva to bribe the police officer to abandon the case, and cancel the search warrant, so that he can return home.

Indeed, Nsengiyumva brought the money and he was eventually arrested red handed as he attempted to bribe an officer.

CIP Twizeyimana warned that Rwanda National Police (RNP) has adopted a zero-tolerance policy on corruption; no one will be tolerated for giving, receiving or soliciting bribes.

“Bribery or corruption has no room either in RNP or in the country. A crime cannot solve a crime; but it attracts more charges. It is better to follow the right procedures to acquire a service,” CIP Twizeyimana emphasized.

“RNP has taken a number of measures against bribery and will continue to stand against such conduct so that the punlic can take that into account and remain law abiding instead of taking shortcuts and illegal channels.”

The spokesperson for Eastern region commended the officers for denouncing bribery and for acting fast to arrest the suspect, which is a direct warning to members of the public who seek to bribe their way out of wrongdoing.
