Rwamagana: Leaders discuss on strengthening security

Local leaders, Police and other security organs in Rwamagana District, yesterday held a meeting to assess the security situation, and to device more effective means to deal with the security challenges that still exist.

The meeting co-chaired by the district mayor and the District Police Commander Supt. Edward Kiiza brought together all sector executive secretaries, members of the security committee, among others.

The security assessment also talked the issue of sanitation and hygiene.

The DPC, in his report, noted that although crimes have decreased tremendously, drug trafficking and abuse, distilling of illicit brew, theft, assault and child-related abuses are still common.

He noted that the Police-public partnership in crime detection and prevention has been an effective tool and urged the local leaders to equally be active in the implementation of these community policing efforts.

Mayor Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi reminded the grassroots leaders that implementation of security and development programmes lies in their daily responsibilities.

“This country is built on partnership and ownership of all entities. It’s not Police or army that is solely responsible for security, it’s for us all,” the mayor said.

He emphasised that community policing is headed by grassroots leaders especially at the Village and Cell levels, which makes it the responsibility of the local government as it is the duty of all Rwandans to report wrongdoers like drug traffickers, among others.
