Commercial cyclists in Kigabiro Sector, Rwamagana District have committed to supporting community policing efforts by identifying and reporting wrongdoers.
The commitment was made Thursday during the Police anti-crime awareness campaign when they met over 450 members of COTRAVERWA, a cooperative of cyclists in Kigabiro.
The meeting tackled five key security issues; road safety and drunken riding, fighting trafficking, sell and abuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances; fighting child labour—serving alcoholic drinks to minors and child sexual violence.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, while addressing the cyclists, reminded them of their community policing rights and responsibilities where they operate or live.
“Wherever you are, always remember that security is also your responsibility; when you see or suspect someone to be a drug dealer it becomes your responsibility to protect your community by reporting these dealers,” CIP Twizeyimana told the cyclists.
He also advised them against abusing drugs, which is equally a criminal act, and riding while drunk, which is suicide.
“When you drink, it’s safe for you and for other road users if you let a sober person ride you home. Don’t be a threat to self and other road users,” CIP Twizeyimana advised.
He further urged them to protect children by reporting people employing them in homes or other child labour activities, sexual abuse and people, who serve them alcoholic drinks.
