Zephelin Nzamwitakuze, 42, a teacher at Nkuri Primary School located in Nyabirasi Sector in Rutsiro District is in Police custody after pupils decided to protect what rightly belongs to them and reported her police for stealing milk meant for them at school.
It all started when Nzamwitakuze parked 65 packets from the store and gave them to two pupils to take them to her home in the nearby Kanzeze Sector in Rubavu District.
Knowing that what their mentor was doing was unlawful, the pupils decided to go to the police station, reported their teacher and handed over the milk as exhibit.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobard Kanamugire, the Western Region police spokesperson, said: "This teacher is supposed to be a mentor and to help implement government programmes including those related to healthy living, which the milk is meant for. Instead, she's retarding these programme and involving the pupils, who should be looking up to her, in criminal activities.
He thanked the pupils for the exemplary spirit and standing up for their rights and refusing to be involved in such malpractices.
“Teachers have to always be exemplary, they are entrusted to raise and nurture the youngsters to become more responsible citizens," said CIP Kanamugire.
The government Milk Programme in schools started in 2010 after a survey carried out in 2009, confirmed that in some Districts, pupils were facing poor feeding.
